		<abstract>The paper presents the architecture of VISTA  an object-oriented system to support the tasks of visual exploratory analysis. Based on the scientific data analysis process and on several case studies, the tasks frequently executed by scientists in analyzing their models are identified. Adequate tools are needed to support these tasks. VISTA is constituted by generic tools that can be applied for the analysis of models of different classes of entities.</abstract>
